What is a full-service school?

A full-service school, in the context of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), is a mainstream school that has been adapted to cater to a wider range of learning needs, including those of learners with disabilities and special educational needs. The aim of full-service schools is to promote inclusive education by ensuring that all learners, regardless of their abilities or disabilities, have access to a high-quality education within their local communities.

Key Features of a Full-Service School:

  1. Inclusivity: Full-service schools accommodate learners with diverse needs, ensuring that they can participate fully in all school activities.

  2. Support Services: These schools provide additional support services such as special education support, counseling, and therapeutic services to assist learners with special needs.

  3. Adapted Infrastructure: Full-service schools have adapted infrastructure, including accessible classrooms, bathrooms, and recreational areas, to ensure physical access for learners with disabilities.

  4. Specialized Training for Educators: Educators in full-service schools receive specialized training to equip them with the skills and knowledge to effectively teach and support learners with diverse needs.

  5. Collaborative Approach: These schools often work closely with other educational institutions, specialists, and the community to provide a comprehensive support system for learners.

  6. Individualized Education Plans (IEPs): Learners with special needs typically have individualized education plans that outline specific learning goals, accommodations, and support services tailored to their unique needs.

Goals of Full-Service Schools:

  • To provide equitable access to education for all learners.
  • To foster an inclusive school environment that respects and values diversity.
  • To support the academic, social, and emotional development of all learners.
  • To reduce barriers to learning and participation.

In the WCED context, full-service schools are part of the broader strategy to promote inclusive education and ensure that all learners can achieve their full potential within the mainstream education system.
